Values in Action Schools Project

The Values in Action Schools Project (VASP) was a national project in which clusters of schools were funded by the Australian Government to design, implement and evaluate the outcomes of high quality values education projects. The Values in Action Schools Project reflected the commitment to high quality schooling and to the role that effective, planned and systematic values education can have in improving social and academic outcomes for Australian students. VASP built on the significant values education work previously undertaken in the Values Education Good Practice School Projects – Stages 1 and 2.

All Australian schools were invited to apply for grants to support school clusters designing, implementing and reporting on innovative values in action education projects during the 2009 school year. The VASP Cluster projects provide evidence-based guidance to all schools on how to effectively use values education to improve educational outcomes for the long-term benefit of students, teachers and the whole school community.

Successful clusters
A list of the 16 successful clusters and a brief description of each project is available on the website.

National Briefing Sessions
Two National Briefing Sessions were convened for cluster leaders and university advisors at critical points in the VASP project. The first National Briefing Session was held in Melbourne on 10 December 2008. The second National Briefing Session was convened in Canberra on the 28 – 29 April 2009, prior to the National Values Education Conference 30 April – 1 May 2009.

Evaluation Summit
An Evaluation Summit was convened on 16 October 2009 in Melbourne. The purpose of the Summit was to evaluate the outcomes of projects using a structured and facilitated participatory evaluation methodology, called the Most Significant Change (MSC) technique. The Summit involved teacher, parent and student representation from each cluster and was an innovative means of gathering evidence of change generated by the cluster projects. The Evaluation Summit also deeply informed the approach of clusters to their final reports and the Final Report of the VASP. Video clips from the Summit capture part of the discussion around the most significant changes from the VASP.
