Activity 2: An electricity generator

How does an electricity generator work?

What to use
Several metres of thin insulated wire, magnet, narrow cardboard tube, compass.
What to do
  1. Wrap thin insulated wire around a narrow cardboard tube to make up to 50 tight turns of wire. You may have to use tape to keep the wire in place.
  2. Leave about 50 cm of wire free at the ends of the coil. Connect your compass detector (galvanometer) to the wires.
  3. Move a magnet in and out of the coil quickly.
    A simple electric generator
  1. What do you observe in the compass detector?
  2. Describe what you think is happening.
  3. Why do you think the tube coil and the compass detector should be separated by 50 cm? (Hint: Remember what happened when you used a compass to make an electricity detector at Station 5.)
