Schools as Community Centres

The Schools as Community Centres (SaCC ) program aims to:

  • influence the planning and integration of service delivery to better meet the needs of families with children from birth to eight years with a focus on the years prior to school
  • support families with children from birth to eight years with a view to ensuring that children have a healthy and positive start to school, and
  • strengthen communities through interagency collaboration and community participation in decision-making processes which relate to the provision of services.

Target group: SaCC targets disadvantaged communities with young children and families, and families with children 0-8 years with a priority on children 0-5 years.

Coverage: Specific localities (currently Curran, Coonamble, Redfern, Chertsey, Kelso, Kempsey, Glebe, Marrickville West, Rosemeadow, Anna Bay, Cessnock, Windale, Bonnyrigg, Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Fairfield Public Schools). Further expansion in Central Coast, Hunter and South West Sydney regions is expected in 2002. Additional centres may be funded as Families First planning is achieved across NSW.

Timeframe: Ongoing.

Responsible Agency: The NSW Department of Education and Training is the lead agency with responsibility for co-ordinating the implementation of the project across NSW. The program is managed in close collaboration with the NSW Department of Community Services, NSW Health and NSW Department of Housing.
