These structures form part of a support plan, which relies on the strengths of the young person as identified by the young person, the family, the school and the team. The support plan enlists the backing of non-traditional support persons to facilitate a more positive engagement of the young person with education and community life. The model is based on the Wraparound process developed by American academic and researcher, Lucille Eber. The major objective for the Family and Community Development Services funding is to enable families to provide a caring environment for their children which protects them from neglect, harm, abuse and exploitation, and ensures they are not disadvantaged and allows them to reach their full potential. Twenty service providers work in partnership with host organisations to deliver the program in places as geographically diverse as Allendale East, Keith Loxton, Streaky Bay and Coober Pedy. The broad range of service providers includes: Air Force Cadets, Air Youth, Army and Navy Cadet Corps, Carclew Youth Arts Centre, Conservation Volunteers Australia, Country Fire Service, Police, Red Cross, Royal Life Saving, Surf Life Saving, Scouts and Guides, State Emergency Service and St John Ambulance. The active8 Premier's Youth Challenge is an initiative in which the partnerships between government, the community sector and the private sector provide significant benefits for the young people of South Australia. Supported by a funded Education Officer. Students undertake learning activities at the zoo including projects in revegetation, land care management, construction, as well as animal related skills. Students receive accreditation towards SACE or VET certification. Program aims to improve student's involvement in education, training and employment through the development of personal attitudes and values of self-esteem, motivation, team work and community responsibility. Target group: 14-18 year olds at risk of not completing schooling and who have behavioural issues. Coverage: State wide Timeframe: Ongoing Responsible agency: Department of Education, Training and Employment-Student and Professional Services Website: www.dete.sa.gov.au Young People, Crime Prevention and the Arts Initiative Arts SA in partnership with the Office of Crime Prevention (Justice Portfolio) is developing a joint initiative targeting young people "at risk", using arts activity (eg drama, contemporary music, or visual art) as the medium. The objective is to offer high quality opportunities for young people to explore and express their creativity and their aspirations, provide pathways to employment and other community support systems, and to demonstrate to young people that their contributions are valued and respected. To be jointly funded initially by Arts SA and the Office of Crime Prevention. OCBA does not have any specific initiatives to address these recommendations however there are a range of packages which can be incorporated in bigger strategies. Eg, OCBA maintains a range of financial, renting and purchasing advice specifically aimed at younger people who are trying to make their respective ways in late teens or early adulthood. OCBA is also a regular contributor to school curriculum work on consumer-related issues by providing materials and presentations. OCBA can provide supporting information to teachers who want to equip students with basic personal survival and life skills in the areas mentioned above as well as provide presentations to groups of students and has regularly done so in the school environment. Discos and other youth initiatives operate under Blue Light including 2 adventure-based camps. The programs aims to promote feelings of self-worth and self-motivation and respect for other people and their property, in the process of strengthening the ties between the police and young people. Target group: 12-18 years Coverage: State wide Timeframe: Ongoing Responsible agency: South Australia Police Website: www.sapolice.sa.gov.au Collaborative project between State Govt, Passenger Transport Board, Adelaide City Council and Central Workers with Youth Action Network aims to reduce the number of young people stranded or at risk in the inner city, particularly overnight. The project provides free public transport, to ensure less young people stay in the city overnight and encourages better relations with police, youth workers and other young people.
