National Centre for Vocational Education Research Ltd (NCVER)

The Centre is a public company owned by the Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers responsible for vocational education. The owners contribute the core grant to cover annual operations of NCVER. Additional funds can also be raised or earned (for example, from the sale of materials) and research grants can be obtained. Oversight is provided by a Board of Directors. The Centre is located in Adelaide.

The NCVER:

  • conducts and funds national research;
  • is responsible for disseminating TAFE and training statistics;
  • operates the National Vocational Education and Training Clearinghouse, an ILO focal point;
  • publishes reports, a journal and the "Australian Training Review";
  • conducts workshops and conferences.


The Centre was originally established as the TAFE National Centre for Research and Development Ltd by resolution of the AEC in October 1979 following recommendations in the Kangan Report (1974) and the Williams Report (1979). It was established in 1980 and commenced operations in 1981.
