Victorian Government launches new initiatives on teaching and school leadership

The Victorian Government has launched From New Directions to Action: World Class Teaching and School Leadership, a policy paper that sets out 26 initiatives to 'attract stronger candidates into teaching and improve their preparation'; 'create a high performance profession of excellence and effective professional development'; and 'provide strong direction, leadership and support at school and system levels'. $100m extra support for public schools in NSW

NSW Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli has announced an additional $100 million in funding for public schools for 2014.

54 Queensland state schools to turn independent

A further 54 state schools in Queensland have been accepted for independent status. The changes will allow principals to recruit teachers directly and to control the school's budget. See report on Yahoo News 16 October 2013.

New British study confirms benefits of reading for pleasure

Children who read for pleasure are likely to do significantly better at school than their peers, according to new research from the Univeristy of London's Institute of Education. See also article in the Sydney Morning Herald 11 October 2013.
