Quality Teaching for Diverse Students in Schooling

This report is intended to contribute to the development of the evidence base for policy and practice in New Zealand schooling. It finds that up to 59 per cent of variance in student performance is attributable to differences between teachers and classes, while up to almost 21 per cent is attributable to school level variables. Ten characteristics of quality teaching have been derived from a synthesis of research findings of evidence linked to student outcomes. The notion of a 'normal' group and 'other' or minority groups of children is rejected in favour of a recognition of diversity and difference as central to classroom endeavour.

The Education Gospel: The Economic Power of Schooling

This book argues that abilities developed in schools and universities and the competencies required in work are often mismatched. The challenge ahead is to create learning environments that incorporate both economic and civic goals, and to shift the current focus away from a preoccupation with narrow work skills and empty credentials. The book uses current and historical examples from the American context, where statistics indicate that at least one-third are over-educated for the jobs they hold, while many others are under-educated for serious work. The authors suggest that schooling, despite intentions, has reinforced social inequality and that the race for personal advancement and workplace preparation has seen the value of learning for its own sake fall by the wayside.(Adapted from publisher's description)

Preparing Mathematics and Science Teachers for Diverse Classrooms

Mathematics and science education has been slow to respond to issues of diversity and equity. This book suggests ways in which teacher educators in science and maths can develop collaborative networks which focus on multicultural education and equity. Teacher educators from the USA provide examples of how they have assisted prospective and practising teachers understand and teach for diversity within the two subject areas. A theoretical background and practical strategies for dealing with resistance to learning to teach for diversity are provided, with reference to both culture and gender. Strategies to encourage teaching for understanding, using student-centered and inquiry-based pedagogical approaches, are also outlined.
