RoutledgeFalmer,
2004
This book explores the current provision of educational support for students with moderate learning difficulties (MLD), and contributes to the debate on future policy and practice for students with MLD. The book explores the definition of MLD, cross-cultural studies on the learning outcomes of MLD students, findings from research with local authorities in Great Britain and the authors’ own study of MLD students. Three options for future policy in Great Britain are suggested: to retain MLD within special needs education provision; to introduce a new social inclusion framework for administering provision; or to create a new category of mild mixed difficulties to govern provision. The authors seek to extend the existing debate to include men's role in family life, elder care and care for those with a disability, and highlight the relationship between paid and unpaid work. It also considers costs to employers and the economy in terms of both workforce participation and productivity. Forty-five recommendations are made, involving changes to legislation, workplace policy and practice, and government programs. (Adapted from review and report.)
