Extensive contemporary research highlights the importance of providing young children with access to rich and developmentally appropriate learning environments. In 2007 the Sydney Catholic Education Office began a project to encourage its school leaders and teachers to reflect on ways to enhance educational practices in the early years, to gain deeper knowledge of the early learner, and to develop pedagogy that is appropriate for early learners, consistent with current curriculum requirements. The project, run in collaboration with the Institute of Early Childhood at Macquarie University, involved teachers and school leaders in the process of change. An evaluation of the project identified significant academic and social benefits for the children involved.
