The proposed new courses of study for Years 11 and 12 in Western Australia have come under heavy challenge in the media, and are now going through a process of revision. However, as a school principal I would like to support the thrust of the proposed reforms. At the moment, students come out with a percentage grade. That doesn't tell students, parents or employers what the students do or don't know, or can or can't do. By contrast, the assessment used with the courses of study would demonstrate student achievement. The current system is more than 50 years old and does not reflect current thinking on teaching and student learning.
