New national curriculum
The Australian curriculum is being developed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, principals, government, state and territory education authorities, professional education associations, business/industry, community groups and the public.
The development of Australia’s national curriculum spans Kindergarten to Year 12, starting with the learning areas of English, mathematics, science and history, for implementation from 2011. As a second phase of work, national curriculum will be developed in languages, geography and the arts.

Consultation on the draft Australian Curriculum
A draft national curriculum for K-10 English, mathematics, science and history will be released on Monday 1 March for consultation until 23 May. Documents proposing the broad shape of the curriculum in each of these subjects were published in draft form in 2008 and, after extensive consultation, revised and published in early 2009. My School
The My School website went live on 28 January, and profiles almost 10,000 Australian schools. My School allows users to find local school information and compare statistically similar schools, including viewing school-level NAPLAN results.
About ACARA
ACARA is responsible for:
- A national curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12 in specified learning areas;
- A national assessment program aligned to the national curriculum that measures students’ progress;
- A national data collection and reporting program that supports analysis, evaluation, research and resource allocation, and accountability and reporting on schools and broader national achievement.
