The Australian Paralympic Committee commissioned Curriculum Corporation to review existing lesson plans and develop new lesson plans for their Paralympic Education Program website in time for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
The Paralympic Education Program (PEP) is an ongoing education program flowing on from the highly successful National Education Program attached to the Sydney Olympic Games. Created in 2006, the PEP is supported through funding from the Australian Sports Commission and Telstra, and its purpose is to familiarise the Australian public with Australian Paralympians, Paralympic sports and rules and the classification system. It also aims to assist the public to understand the issues associated with people with disabilities in general.
The purpose of this project is to:
- Further develop the existing PEP program by providing additional online resources to engage teachers and students, and to continue to familiarise the Australian public in general with Australian Paralympians, Paralympic sports and rules, the classification system, and issues related to people with disabilities in general.
- Provide some feedback to the APC on the educational merit of their new education website, and some advice on the demand for resources for secondary schools, based on teacher feedback.
