This project is commissioned by National Indigenous Television (NITV).

The National Apology set in motion a cultural shift in the Australian mindset. It bought fundamental issues to the forefront in terms of human rights, inequality, oppression and reconciliation at a national level unparalleled since the 1967 referendum.

As a result, the phrase 'Closing the Gap' has been employed to focus attention on issues related to Indigenous peoples' health and wellbeing, community relations, human rights, educational outcomes, and has stimulated policy and action on a range of related social, economic and political fronts.

This project is to develop a resource for senior secondary English students. This resource is presented in two forms:

  • an illustrated web-delivered discussion guide (PDF booklet) with support materials to stimulate classroom discussion; and
  • a 20 page print booklet and DVD distributed to all Australian secondary schools.

The resource guides debate of the issues raised in the Geoffrey Robertson Hypothetical 'Closing the Gap', which was broadcast on NITV 13 February 2009 to mark the first anniversary of Sorry Day. The resource is mapped to all State and Territory senior secondary English curriculums and includes links to Learning Areas Other than English.
