Curriculum Corporation is the project manager of the Australian Government's Civics and Citizenship Education programme. The programme:
- promotes knowledge and understanding of Australia’s system of government amongst Australian students;
- engenders understanding and appreciation of Australia's democratic heritage and its political institutions;
- equips Australian students with the skills, attitudes, values and dispositions to fully participate in the civic life of their communities and the nation.
School Resources
Curriculum Corporation produced materials for Australian schools under the Civics and Citizenship Education programme:
- The Discovering Democracy resources include Big Books for lower primary, Teaching and Learning Units on major civics and citizenship themes for primary and secondary levels, teacher reference texts, interactive CD-ROMS, DVDs, posters and charts, 'Readers' exploring civics themes through literature, assessment resources, and the Parliament@Work database.
- The Civics and Citizenship Education website, Australia's pre-eminent civics and citizenship education web portal, is managed by Curriculum Corporation. The website contains resources, information, activities and links for teachers, students and parents involved in civics and citizenship education.
Former National Civics and Citizenship Education Initiatives
Curriculum Corporation worked with the Australian Government, education systems and sectors in the States and Territories and other key stakeholders to develop national approaches to civics and citizenship education:
- The Statements of Learning for Civics and Citizenship Education outline the opportunities for civics and citizenship education in State and Territory curricula at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The Statements help students to achieve against the Key Performance Markers at Years 6 and 10 in the Civics and Citizenship Assessment Domain. States and Territories aimed to implement the Statements in their respective curricula by 2008.
- From 2004 to 2008, the Celebrating Democracy Week initiative assisted schools and education systems across the country in hosting civics and citizenship education activities and events during Celebrating Democracy Week.
- Every Voice Counts! enabled senior secondary students to participate in a national student forum in Canberra during Celebrating Democracy Week.
