The Assessment for Learning website has been updated to provide more web-based professional learning resources for teachers. The project draws on research prepared by the UK-based Assessment Reform Group and links assessment and learning.

Assessment for Learning acknowledges that assessment occurs as a regular part of teaching and that assessment activities shape the teaching and learning process. This approach is opposed to 'assessment of' learning -that is, assessment solely for the purpose of accountability and evaluation.

The website engages teachers in Assessment for Learning theory and practice to develop effective classroom assessment.

A series of DVDs and a teacher reference text complement and extend the material on the Assessment for Learning website.

There are eight professional learning modules on the website, each of which is designed for use by individual teachers. School-based facilitators might like to adapt the material to use in a workshop situation. Schools might also consider how completion of these modules could contribute towards the fulfillment of staff professional learning obligations.

The modules are listed in a suggested order of viewing.

The first module, An introduction to Assessment for Learning, examines some of the basic ideas underlying formative assessment and seeks to establish a general understanding before users undertake the other, more specific, Assessment for Learning modules:

  • Learning intentions
  • Success criteria and rubrics
  • Effective teacher feedback
  • Strategic questioning
  • Peer feedback
  • Student self-assessment
  • Formative use of summative assessment.
