Statements of Learning for Civics and Citizenship – Year 5
Government and Law
Students consider the purpose of laws within a democracy. They have the opportunity to:
- explore why society has laws and examine what happens when people break laws
- discuss rules and laws that affect young people and assess these according to fairness and appropriateness
- identify key personnel within the legal system who help to protect people's rights.
Citizenship in a Democracy
Students understand and practise personal rights and responsibilities within their school community. They have the opportunity to:
- define and exercise personal and shared rights and responsibilities within local contexts
- promote social cohesion and celebrate diversity by recognising the rights of others to be different within the rule of law.
