Political parties and social movements: Activity 2

  1. Explain to students that (after finding out about how people from political parties and social movements have created change in the past) they will now research contemporary people and evaluate the strategies that they use.

    Possible people to research include:

    Students may like to use the following websites to research other contemporary Australians who are involved in political parties and social movements.

    Provide students with an A3 size copy of Political parties and social movements (Now) (pdf format). Ask students to divide into expert groups, with group members bringing back information about four of the people listed above or other Australians involved in political parties or social movements (as negotiated with the teacher).

    Inform students about the amount of time that they have to conduct their research. At the end of the allocated time, the experts return to their original groups and share their information.

  2. Provide students with another copy of Evaluating the success of strategies employed (pdf format). Ask the students to:

    • list the strategies employed by the four contemporary people
    • rate the strategies in terms of their success in achieving their goal/s
    • justify their rating.

Reflection

Ask student to identify a school or community issue that is important to them and then record strategies that they use to influence representative groups in order to raise awareness and bring about change. Students will need to explain how and why these strategies are effective.

Strategies students could employ include:

  • joining the School Representative Council
  • organising a petition
  • writing letters to local, state and national newspapers
  • addressing the school assembly to raise awareness within the student body
  • inviting a member of local, state or federal government to speak to students.
